CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Galatians 3:7, Psalm 105:1-6)

Understand this, by faith in Christ, we are descendants of Abraham.

So, give thanks to the Lord, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.

Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works.

Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.  Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.

Remember the wonderful works he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,

O offspring of his servant Abraham, those who have been called to take up Christ’s cross.

PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE

Lord, our God, we pray that your Spirit would guide and inspire our worship.  Open our mouths to sing and speak your praise, open our ears to hear your Word, open our eyes to see you at work among us, open our hearts to receive your love.

We pray that your Word inspire us to do justice, to love mercy and kindness and to always walk humbly with you.  Make us instruments of your peace and unity.  Lead us to be companions of those who grieve, who are ill, you have suffered through tragedy and disasters, who are lonely and overlooked.  Fill our hearts with courage to speak your truth in times of lies and deceptions.  Make us more like Christ.

We offer ourselves to You, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord who first taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT

God of Compassion, sometimes we are reluctant to follow your divine authority and to place our entire trust in you.  We feel more secure trusting in our own ability and our own strength.  Thank you for this moment in our worship service when we are reminded that your unwavering, steadfast love engulfs us like a mother’s gentle caress.  Bless these gifts and we who give them.  Trusting in your heavenly grace, we pray.  Amen.

Go now and follow Jesus in the way of the cross.
Rejoice in hope,
hold fast to what is good,
persevere in prayer.
Do not be overcome by evil,

As far as is possible, live peaceably with all.

And may the Love of God surround you, the peace of Christ fill you and the Holy Spirit guide your way.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord and bless the world.

Leviticus 19:11-12 Matthew 5:33-37 Even if we've never seen the movie, Gone with the Wind, we're probably familiar with Scarlett O'Hara's oath. Framed by the sunset, Scarlet raises her fist in defiance and says, “As God is my witness, I will never be hungry again!” In today's passage from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus leads us into a new understanding of oaths and profanity. Did the character, Scarlett O’Hara in the movie, Gone with the Wind , take the Lord’s name in vain when she made her famous oath? “As God is my witness, as God is my witness, they’re not going to lick me. JUST BECAUSE I'M A LIBERAL ...

  Brothers and Sisters, may I share something that's been on my mind for quite a while? Just because I'm a liberal doesn't mean I'm not a Christian, because I am.  Born again and spirit-filled, it is my true identity and shapes my life, my decisions and where I fall on the spectrum.  I am unafraid and unashamed to declare, "Jesus is Lord," and I pray my actions affirm my words. Just because I'm a liberal and a Christian, doesn't mean that I don't love and respect those who are different than I am, rather in religion or politics or because of country of origin or native language.  I do, because my faith informs how I see others -- created in the image of God, given divine worth by our Creator.  To judge a person for who and what they are and not accept them is to, in my book, to call God a liar. Just because I'm a Christian who happens to be a liberal, doesn't mean I don't love my country or care about the community where I live.  God
