LIVING INTO SIGNIFICANCE -- DAY TWO

Living Into Significance is a 30 day (a ministry of the United Methodist church) shared experience  where anyone can join us in being intentional to take a few minutes in a day and reflecting on a single word.  This will be in addiion to my usual post and I am looking forward to being in conversation with you.
Once you’ve spent some time with the word, focus on how the word could bring meaning into your life. Once you’ve experienced the significance of the word in your life please share a photo, poem, blog post, or even a simple comment on how you applied the meaning of that world to your life. Here is the schedule of daily words for this month.
Day 1:  OCCUPATION

  1. Ephesians 6:5-8New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

    Slaves and Masters
5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ; 6 not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. 7 Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women, 8 knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free.

Using today's word as a spring board, I remembered the night, when I was a junior in college, that I read the above passage from Ephesians. The epiphany I had was that no matter where I worked, I was serving Christ. Work was not just a job or a career, it was vocation -- a way that I lived out my calling or purpose as a Christian. I found myself seeking out jobs that aligned with my purpose.

Paraphrasing a Laurance J. Peter quote I once read, I believe that any job, if done as if Jesus was our employer, results in making a positive impact. Even when I took jobs in tight times just to make pay the bills, if I remembered to do just that, were good experiences.
